Plane Stupid : Polar Bear

on AdvertisingNovember 23rdView Comments

Airline pollution activists Plane Stupid are on a collision course with the advertising regulator after launching a graphic cinema campaign that sees CGI polar bears falling to bloody deaths to highlight the impact of carbon emissions. The group is aiming to point out that even short flights to the continent have a major impact on carbon emissions. Plane Stupid said that the ad was inspired by the fact that an average European flight produces 400kg of carbon, which it claims is the same weight as an average female polar bear. “We wanted to confront people with the impact that short-haul flights have on the climate,” said Robert Saville, a director at Mother. “We used polar bears because they are a well understood symbol of the effect that climate change is having on the natural world. The polar bears were created by special effects company MPC using its proprietary fur software, “Furtility”, to look as realistic as possible.

Thank you for that appraisal of my comment Marc. I have some feedback for you too:

    - "What is implied is not always exactly what they say."
As far as I am aware, by the very definition of the word imply, what is implied is NEVER exactly what they say. It is a hint or an insinuation, meaning that it is covert, not overt.

    - It may be the ego-centric aspects of my personality, but I can't for the life of me see what is so unintelligent about my comment. Amusing, yes, unintelligent, no. I was pointing out, in the voice of moral panic, the hypocritical aspects of the advertisement. Whether the polar bears were CGI, or not (ha ha, that's a joke. I pointed it out in case I am branded unintelligent again), the advertising company depicted them being thrown off high-rise buildings. This in my book is akin to global warming killing polar bears through the effect of melting ice caps.

    Karen:

I'm sorry but the point wasn't really gotten across with me. The advert exposed me to information I already knew, and having known it before, I can't say it changed my actions towards global warming or the aviation industry.

Throw them off even! I do apologise!

It has to be done in a way that makes an impact otherwise no one would take any notice. It's not easy viewing, but it gets the point across. These bears are CGI though, they didn't really through them off the buildings! Could you imagine the impact that would have one people; that's all we think about as we destroy the planet and everything on it.

    Thought provoking.

It always amuses me when people make unintelligent comments like the first, here.

What is implied is not always exactly what they say, just look at all the ads on tv, none of them are completely accurate, many of them merely point out what happens.

Tis all they say here, through the medium of a shocking reality check

this is grim but it made me think. i'm glad i don't fly anywhere

It makes a good point though, indirectly the greenhouse gases do lead to the deaths of polar bears via global warming/ice caps etc. It's just a different way of expressing it I guess.

I think it's truly disgusting that this video would make the implication greenhouse gases lead to the deaths of polar bears, and then make polar bears base jump from high locations, resulting in their deaths.

    How dare they!?
