Abandoned Houses by Kevin Bauman

We’ve seen some weird photography projects in the past and this one is definitely high on the hill. Kevin Bauman photographed 100 abandoned houses in Detroit, Michigan. Once a city of almost 2,000,000 citizens, Detroit has since lost over half its population over the last sixty years. With such a dramatic decline, the abandoned house problem is not likely to go away any time soon. The abandoned houses project began innocently enough roughly ten years ago. As the number of photographs grew, a documentary style emerged. Kevin switched from mostly black and white, to color, and decided to name the series 100 Abandoned Houses. Organic Architecture

If there’s anything that gets our head turning, it’s great architecture. Located on a flag lot, a steep sloping grade provided the opportunity to bring the main level of this brilliant house into the tree canopy to evoke the feeling of being in a tree house. A lover of music, the client wanted a house that not only became part of the natural landscape but also addressed the flow of music. One must actually stroll through the house to grasp its complexities and its connection to the exterior. One example is a natural wood ceiling, floating on curved laminated wood beams, passing through a generous glass wall which wraps around the main living room. The genius behind this creation is Robert Harvey Oshatz and his work can be found here.

Remember those luxurious workplaces at Facebook and Google? Well, if the lifestyle of those employees didn’t inspire you to apply for the jobs listed on their website than we’ve got the thing for you. Last year Twitter was the fastest growing community on the internet. In February ‘08 they had close to 475K members and a year later that number has grown to a staggering 7,038,000. Today, you can find anyone and everyone on Twitter from Barack Obama to Jimmy Carr to us! Enough about the company itself and a little more about their workplace, or shall we say their palace! Well, in America not only is it cool to knit in Starbucks while sipping on your dark berry mocha but also on public monuments. Based in Austin, Texas KnittaPlease is what they call a knit graffiti crew. Magda Sayeg is the founder of such brilliant art and has definitely made it into our book of cool things.
